DOMINO Launched at CRUFTS 2001

The Domino campaign, which is backed by the Kennel Club was officially launched at this years Crufts between 25th to 28th May 2001.   The event was planned to raise awareness amongst dog lovers and members of the public of the plight of many innocent dog owners and their canine companions who continue to suffer the effects of Breed Specific Legislation.

The campaign takes over from the previous Dogs At Risk in Europe campaign which began at last years Discover Dogs show at Earls Court.   It concluded in December 2000 with a protest delegation, organised by Theresa Villiers MEP and including Roger Helmer MEP, representatives of the Kennel Club and concerned dog owners representing the DARE campaign, going to Downing Street to hand in a petition and protest letter to the Prime Minister Tony Blair.

DARE was formed last autumn after earlier events in Germany which saw a new law which came into effect in April this year.   However, with many other Countries across the globe introducing similar Breed Specific Legislation it was felt that the campaign needed to be expanded to fight BSL wherever it arose.   Hence the emergence of Domino reflecting the domino effect where one after another Country after Country, breed after breed has fallen victim to these unjust breed specific laws.   Domino believes in the principle of 'punish the deed, not the breed'.

Several concerned dog owners came along to lend a hand during the four days of the show which proved highly successful.   The star of the stand during the first three days was Tammy, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, proudly sporting her PAT dog coat.   She behaved immaculately during the whole time, drowning everyone with sloppy Stafford kisses and proving a real ambassador for her breed and her proud owner Wendy Clewley.

On day four a TV crew from Granada TV arrived to film the stand for an upcoming documentary about Breed Specific Legislation to be shown on Channel 5.   They also filmed a lengthy interview on the stand with Kennel Club press officer, Phil Buckley.

The stand was set up by Mike and Sheila Reed who did an excellent job and there were many noteworthy contributions by everyone involved both during the four days at Crufts and also in the run up to the event.   This was just the beginning.   Domino will continue to campaign, in partnership with the Kennel Club and other like minded groups, for an end to all Breed Specific Legislation wherever it occurs.   They continue to work closely with the Kennel Club to secure support for the campaign amongst politicians, the media and many other concerned individuals.   Hopefully Domino will be attending many more shows in a bid to continue to raise awareness amongst dog owners and members of the public about this issue.

The campaign is now under the name Deed Not Breed.   Click the banner below to visit their website.
