Dogs At Risk in Europe
Find out about the new DOMINO Campaign being launched at Crufts 2001
DARE Campaign at Discover Dogs 2000 and BSL in general
Following the recent Breed Specific Legislation (BSL) in Germany during the summer of this year (2000) it became apparent that they intended to raise the issue at EU level in a bid to have this legislation brought in across the European Community. The DARE campaign was started in a bid to raise the awareness of the British public to this threat at this years Discover Dogs Show.
Since the introduction of the new laws many terrible stories have been coming out of Germany of people and their dogs being attacked and abused including one of an owner who was attacked before her dog was dowsed with petrol and set alight. In another incident a dog that had been left in its owners' car was dragged out of the car and shot three times by a police officer while its helpless owner looked on screaming. Such incidents are horrific in what is supposed to be a civilized society.
As dog lovers we cannot sit back and ignore these events. We all have a moral duty to support the dog lovers of Germany in trying to get this draconian legislation overturned.
In September the Germans went to the EU to raise the issue of extending their legislation across Europe. Whilst the EU stated that they were not convinced this was a matter that they could deal with they left the door open for further moves to introduce legislation at a later date. Despite many letters and complaints the German Government remains unrepentant and are continuing to pursue the issue at European level.
20,000 leaflets were printed to be given out at the show which was a wonderful success. Thousands of people flocked to the stand and were shocked to hear about what's been happening. Amongst those visiting the stand were Theresa Villiers MEP & Roger Helmer MEP who visited on Saturday and on Sunday Wendy Richard and Laila Morse, two of the stars from Eastenders one of our top 'soaps', also came along. The show culminated on Sunday with a petition being taken and handed in at the German Embassy in London.
If we are going to win the battle over BSL we must continue to keep up the pressure both on the politicians and also the media. Raising public awareness of this issue and winning over public opinion is going to be one of our most important requirements if we are going to be able to finally overturn BSL laws in the UK and Europe.
With that in mind the leaflet which was prepared for the DARE campaign can now be downloaded in PDF format and all dog lovers are encouraged to download it and distribute it to their local vets, training clubs, pet shops and anyone else who might be interested. To go straight to the PDF version click here. If you would just like to read it now you can view my own scanned html version through your browser. Just click here.
Here are some pictures from the show and I wish to thank everyone that was on the stand or involved in the campaign for all their hard work on our behalf.

On day two the Terrier group parade was due to take place in the main ring at 11.00AM. |
The lads on the SBT stand decided that instead of one of them going around with one of their own Staffords that they would ask Stuart to go into the parade with Dianna to represent the Staffords. |
